MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

This gentle treatment is perfect for any non specific pain and fascial restriction

Treatment description and therapist thoughts

This gentle therapy starts off with a longer session, within this session the first thing the therapist does is a postural analysis, from this they can work out where the restrictions are and what impact they are having on the body. We may ask you to do this in your underwear so we can see how your body is but if you are not comfortable with this then we suggest form fitting clothing. Because of this analysis we recommend the first session is a longer session, 2 hours is recommended but it can be done in 90mins.

Once the postural analysis is complete, the therapist will formulate a treatment plan specifically targeting the areas of restriction. We don’t work the whole body but instead have a very targeted approach. We recommend 4-6 sessions to see amazing results.

The techniques don’t use any oil and are fairly light touch but the therapists works on applying gentle pressure and movement to the areas of restriction in order to release them. Once released the body is allowed to move and function the way it is supposed to and starts to eliminate the pain associated with fascial dysfunction. The therapist may also give you some homework so you can continue the therapy in between sessions so that we can get the best results for you.

Myofascial Release is best done as a course of treatments, we recommend 4-6 treatments initially followed by monthly maintenance treatments. We always recommend the first treatment as a longer one. Ideally 2 hour although 90mins is possible. This is because we do a thorough consultation followed by a postural analysis before the treatment begins. In the first session it is normal for the consultation and postural analysis to take at least 50% of the treatment time before the treatment can begin. Further treatments will not require this in depth consultation and analysis.

History

Myofascial release therapy (MFR) was developed by John F. Barnes, PT to specifically address the fascia, the connective tissue that runs like a three-dimensional web throughout the body. MFR involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body, including muscles, connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons as well as bones and organs. Fascia supports and protects these structures; it also acts a key part of the nervous system and allows for electrical transmission across it. Osteopathic practice holds that this soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, mental or physical trauma, prolonged stress, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension and corresponding diminished blood flow.
